Byrdie Jones Harder passed away peacefully at the MUSC Health Orangeburg hospital on Sunday, September 1st around 1:45 PM at the age of 92. During her hospital stay, many family members visited or called her to provide comfort.
Byrdie is the daughter of the late Beecher Noble Jones and Dona Marie Woodring. She was born in Riverton, Missouri in 1932 but spent most of her adolescence and early adult years in Doniphan, Missouri. This is where her family owned and ran the “Jones General Store” and where she attended Doniphan High School. It was here that she met her high school sweetheart and husband William (Bill) Harder. They married shortly after high school, moved to Chicago, and had their daughter Lisa Harder McDowell. Later on, the couple had a second child, David Harder. In the late 1960s, Byrdie and Bill relocated to Orangeburg, South Carolina. Here, Byrdie was affectionately nicknamed “Mal” by her many grandchildren. She enjoyed painting, pressing flowers, and gardening. She played bridge with local friends and would usually have the QVC shopping channel playing on her TV. Many of her grandchildren lived with her during their adolescent years. We fondly remember her teaching us the card game “Kings Corner” and will continue to pass that down.
Byrdie is joining her husband of 44 years (William Harder), her children (Lisa Harder McDowell and David Harder), her siblings (Bonnie Jones Featherson, Vonda Wills, Charles David Jones, and Eddie Max Jones), and her great grandson son (Danny Hartless) in passing.
Brydie is survived by her sister, Betty J. Ponder of Oklahoma City, OK. As well as her sister-in-law, Joann Harder of Springfield, Missouri. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, 10 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
In her best interest, we are placing her to rest in South Carolina and Missouri by the means of two urns. She is joining her husband and her daughter in their final resting places.
Family will be having a private ceremony on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at the hour of 10:00a.m.
